About the computer graphics technology major

Computer graphics technology (CGT) integrates the study of visual communication and applied technology. Concentrations are offered in animation/spatial graphics and interactive multimedia development.

Computer graphics skills are used in virtually any industry. Some professional titles include: multimedia developer, graphic designer, digital animator, technical illustrator, web developer, 3D production artist, etc. Technologies in applied computer graphics are consistently reviewed to provide current, relevant education and training.

Skills and abilities this major develops: artistic ability, creativity, analytical skills, computer skills, teamwork, time management, and communication skills.

Opportunities after graduation

Employment of graphic designers is projected to grow 3% from 2021 to 2031, slower than the average for all occupations. Despite limited employment growth, about 24,800 openings for graphic designers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Most of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2022).

According to the IUPUI First Destination Survey in 2021, the average starting salary for graduates from the School of Engineering and Technology with a bachelor's degree was $60,383, and the median was $60,320.

The national median annual salary for graphic designers was $50,710 in 2021 (Occupational Outlook Handbook).
