Paramedic Science

About the paramedic science major

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs), both basic and paramedic, care for people at the scene of emergencies and transport them to hospitals or other health care institutions. They determine the nature and the extent of victims’ medical and trauma-related emergencies and provide initial emergency care. EMT paramedics administer medications, supply intravenous therapy, perform heart monitoring, and provide other lifesaving interventions for the victims of acute illness or injury until they reach a medical facility.
