Advice to students: Remember that your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Take things one step at a time, ask for help when you need it, and celebrate your progress along the way. Growth often happens outside your comfort zone, so stay open to learning, connection, and new opportunities. You belong here, and you’re capable of more than you think.
If you could be any major in your cluster, what would it be? Why?
I would choose the Arts. I’ve always been drawn to the power of storytelling and creative expression and how art helps us understand ourselves and one another. The arts remind us that every person carries a unique story and perspective, and that creativity is essential to empathy and connection. While science and technology help us innovate and solve problems, the arts help us make meaning of those experiences. Together, they shape a more thoughtful and human-centered world.
Biography: My name is Komal Kaur, and I’m originally from Hoshiarpur, a city in East Punjab, now part of India following colonial border divisions. I’ve proudly made Indianapolis my home for many years and am passionate about education, mental health, and fostering community connection. I also lead Gurmat School at the Guru Nanak Sikh Society, where I help youth stay connected to their Sikh heritage and values. I’m currently working on my second children’s book, continuing my love for storytelling and creativity. Outside of work, I love watching football, enjoying random dance parties (especially Bhangra!), and overloading on food with friends. I’m also a proud dog mom to Marvin Gaye, whose personality always keeps life entertaining and full of joy.
