Geology

About the geology major

Geology degrees provide a solid, interdisciplinary background in the sciences. With a foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, and math, geology allows you to understand earth systems and earth processes. Areas of study include earth material (rocks, sediment, soil, petroleum), water (oceans, groundwater, water quality), and the atmosphere (climate change, air quality). Geology also includes the study of interrelationships in the modern environment, such as important concerns about how our global environment and climate are changing and how these changes will affect human activities. Many students in this major conduct research with faculty as part of their degree.

Studies and abilities this major develops include: gathering and recording information, analysis of samples and data, critical thinking skills, physical stamina for fieldwork, verbal and written communication skills, and teamwork.

Engaged learning experiences

Regardless of your major or future career, engaged learning is vital to your present and future. It makes you more marketable for jobs and professional schools upon graduation, it enables you to build deeper connections with faculty and staff in your field of study, and it makes your learning personal by connecting your interests and values with the curriculum from your classes.
