About the electrical engineering technology major

An electrical engineering technology major will prepare you to solve problems related to generating, distributing, transmitting, and using electrical energy. You'll apply your knowledge to help design and develop computers, communications equipment, medical monitoring devices, navigational equipment, and other electrical and electronic equipment.

An engineering technology degree is different than engineering because the class and laboratory work is focused on applications. As you learn theories of how things work, you'll apply them in immediate, relevant ways.

Skills and abilities this major develops: logical thinking skills, mechanical skills, math skills (for analysis, design and troubleshooting), observational skills, and teamwork.

Opportunities after graduation

Employment of electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians is projected to show little or no change from 2021 to 2031. Despite limited employment growth, about 11,000 openings for electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Most of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2022).

According to the IUPUI First Destination Survey in 2021, the average starting salary for electrical engineering technology B.S. graduates was $55,000, and the median was $51,500.

The national median annual salary for electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians was $63,640 in 2021 (Occupational Outlook Handbook).
