About the computer information technology major

Computer and information technology (CIT) students learn to identify, design, implement, and evaluate solutions to meet information technology needs. The program offers four concentrations: networking systems, information security, web development, and data management. Each concentration is designed to provide an applications-oriented, practical education, and hands-on experience. You'll use current and emerging technology to provide software and hardware solutions to business problems, adding value to virtually any organization.

Skills and abilities this major develops: attention to detail, broad knowledge of computing, communication, design, implementation and evaluation of systems or processes, and problem solving.

Opportunities after graduation

Employment of database administrators and architects is projected to grow 9% from 2021 to 2031, faster than the average for all occupations. About 11,500 openings for database administrators and architects are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2022).

According to the IUPUI First Destination Survey in 2021, the average starting salary for graduates from the School of Engineering and Technology with a bachelor's degree was $60,383, and the median was $60,320.

The national median annual salary for database administrators and architects was $101,000 in 2021 (Occupational Outlook Handbook).
